Hijra or Khusra (Third Sex Gender)

The terms third gender and third sex describe individuals who are considered to be neither women nor men, as well as the social category present in those societies who recognize three or more genders.

The state of being neither male nor female may be understood in relation to the individual's sex, gender role, gender identity or sexual orientation. To different cultures or individuals, a third sex or gender may represent an intermediate state between men and women, a state of being both (such as "the spirit of a man in the body of a woman"), the state of being neither (neuter), the ability to cross or swap genders, or another category altogether independent of male and female. This last definition is favored by those who argue for a strict interpretation of the "third gender" concept.

The term has been used to describe Hijras of India and Pakistan, Fa'afafine of Polynesia, and Sworn virgins of the Balkans, among others, and is also used by many of such groups and individuals to describe themselves. In the Western world, lesbian, gay, transgender and intersex people have been described as belonging to a third sex or gender, although some object to this characterization.

The term "third" is usually understood to mean "other"; some anthropologists and sociologists have described fourth, fifth, and many genders

In animals that exhibit sexual dimorphism, a small number of individuals within a population will not differentiate sexually into bodies that are typically male or female. This may be called hermaphroditism or (especially in humans) intersexuality. The incidence varies from population to population, and also varies depending on how femaleness and maleness are understood. Biologist and gender theorist Anne Fausto-Sterling proposed in a 1993 article that 5 sexes may be more adequate than just two, for describing human bodies.

In addition to the physical morphology of sex, transsexual biologist Joan Roughgarden argues that in some non-human animal species, there may be more than two genders. She suggests that with a given biological sex, there might be multiple templates for behavior available to individual organisms

The Hijra of India and Bangladesh are probably the most well known and populous third sex type in the modern world — Mumbai-based community health organisation The Humsafar Trust estimates there are between 5 and 6 million hijras in India. In different areas they are known as Aravani/Aruvani or Jogappa. Often (somewhat misleadingly) called eunuchs in English, they may be born intersex or apparently male, dress in feminine clothes and generally see themselves as neither men nor women. Only 8% of hijras visiting Humsafar clinics are nirwaan (castrated). British photographer Dayanita Singh writes about her friendship with a Hijra, Mona Ahmed, and their two different societies' beliefs about gender: "When I once asked her if she would like to go to Singapore for a sex change operation, she told me, 'You really do not understand. I am the third sex, not a man trying to be a woman. It is your society's problem that you only recognise two sexes.'" Hijra social movements have campaigned for recognition as a third sex, and in 2005, Indian passport application forms were updated with three gender options: M, F, and E (for male, female, and eunuch, respectively).

In addition to the feminine role of hijras, which is widespread across the subcontintent, a few occurrences of institutionalised "female masculinity" have been noted in modern India. Among the Gaddhi in the foothills of the Himalayas, some girls adopt a role as a sadhin, renouncing marriage, and dressing and working as men, but retaining female names and pronouns. A late-nineteenth century anthropologist noted the existence of a similar role in Madras, that of the basivi. However, historian Walter Penrose concludes that in both cases "their status is perhaps more 'transgendered' than 'third-gendered.'" (Wikipedia)

What Is Hermaphrodite?

Allah has made couple of each creation, As in Quran.

Night for the day, winter for the summer, all the living creatures possess couples of same type. In actual even in a single body one can find the couples. Like for instance: one leg is the couple of second leg, one arm of the other, one eye of the other eye, brain has two major hemi- spheres called cerebrum etc.

As far as gender is concerned in simple words it is the second side of a mirror. It means different genders don’t exist, however; the dis-similarity is due to the modification in a single gender that happens naturally. A baby in the form of fetus in side the mother’s womb initially doesn’t possess differentiation of sex. As per program fed in the gene code of chromosomes, this undetermined zygote either starts to become male or female. The determination depends upon the chromosomes of sperm. If Y comes in contact with the X chromosome of ovum, a male baby would be created.

During the development, a fetus possesses initially both the characteristics of male and female. When the program of sex determination starts, one characteristic gets dominance over the other one. Human are not bi-sexual normally, and male and female exists separately unlike some animals that possess bi-sexual characteristics. Therefore; a baby either grow up as a male or a female according to the chromosomal program, but the thing to be remembered is that a baby possesses characteristics of both male and female one dominated over the other.

In virtual sense we can say that a human is a bisexual creature, since it possesses the characteristics of both genders. This is the favor of nature that at any stage the dominancy of one gender characteristics never be overcome by the other. Hence the gender of a man or a woman remains patent though out the life.

We have had few incidences in the past that showed that gender of a man or a woman changed. That had happened due to some fault at the program level in chromosomes. The suppressed characteristics of one gender hidden in an individual over comes the characteristics of the other gender suddenly.

True Hermaphrodites or bisexuals (Hijras) are those who unfortunately during uterine development failed to have had proper differentiations of these gender characteristics and hence neither of the gender got dominance over the other.

In normal circumstances it is usually happens that during intra uterine life when one gender over comes the other, the respective organs belongs to that characteristics grow up while the organs of the other gender that had become suppressed got regressed. Like in a male baby penis develops and vagina would be regressed. If female would be born, the penis shrinks to form clitoris.

In hermaphrodites, however due to lack of this differentiation both of the organs could be present in a single individual and neither of any one would be regressed. There are many forms of hermaphrodites which are on the basis of congenital anomalies. Some of them possess full bisexual characteristics, while some get slight touch of other gender with the dominance of his or her own gender.

Truly speaking, hermaphroditism is a natural abnormal phenomenon and beyond the control of human beings.

What Is Hermaphrodite?

In simple words, both the characteristics of males and females are present on the first day when the baby is going to develop in the womb. The gender will depend upon the chromosomal programs that have started depending upon the sperms and ovum. For instance if Y chromosome of sperm fuse with ovum, then the fetus starts to have characteristics of male and his female characteristics regress. Like he would get penis and scrotum. Remember there is a common structure that give rise either penis, scrotum or vagina and clitoris. In males penis and scrotum would develop, while in females from the same structure vagina and clitoris would develop.
