Migraine:The Most Dreaded Headache
MIGRAINE: When many people think "migraine" they think only of the pain of migraine. The most dreaded and one of the common headache is migraine… It is basically not the pain only rather it consists of four phases/components Prodorme(pre-headache) Aura(feeling) Headache Postdorme(after-headache) Prodorme(pre-headache):almost 40% people with migraine have it..it may start hours to days before migraine….consists of food carving,depression,fatigue,stiff neck muscles Aura:occurs in 20% of people with migraine , it lasts only 1hour to be followed by actual migraine… consists of flashes of light infront of eye,unusual smell is felt,may hear voices,confusion,dizziness,deafness for a short period Headache: Migraines are typically a moderate-to-severe throbbing, pounding headache on one side of head,may spread to other side,.Mostly accompanied by vomiting,irribility to light and sick feeling Although migraine pain can occur at any time of day, statistics have shown the most common time to be 6 a.m. This phase usually lasts from one to 72 hours Postdrome:it takes hours to recover from it as it has been shown that blood flow to brain is decreased…mostly person is fatigued,depressed and has poor concentration.. Why Migraine Occurs: Basically the blood vessels of the brain especially of forehead dilates(increase in its diameter , it leads to stretching of nerves around it which release chemicals that cause pain sensation also it has been known that a chemical serotonin level is decreased that leads to dilated(swell) bloodvessels.. Who are at risk of having migraine: 1)female gender(75%) 2)age group 20's(range 15-45yrs)) 3)family history of migraine 4)medical conditions like high B.P,anxiety etc.. Things to be avoided by migrinous patients: Following things actually act as a provoking factor for migraine… 1)loud sound, intense bright light 2)smoking 3)excercise 4)sudden change in envt(moving from hot to cold area) 5)cigarette 6)excess caffeine ALSO, sexual activity Oral contraceptive pills,menstruation,sexual activity may set off migraine attack Foods: Certain foods with sodium nitrate and phenylalanine compound in them like chocolate,cheese,nuts,beans,excess caffeine are known to provoke it.. Un prescribed treatment of migraine: Painkiller take pain relief that is recommended by a doctor or pharmacist at the first sign of a migraine Rest rest in a quiet, dark room Apply compresses and massage Application of hot or cold compresses and massaging has soothing effect Avoiding triggers keep a diary of when your migraines occur, what foods you eat and what your stress levels are like – this process may help identify migraine triggers Life Style Changes drink plenty of water, maintain regular exercise and eat a healthy diet relaxation exercises, and yoga may reduce stress levels Difference between migraine and other headaches 1) mostly 90percent of the time migraine are one-sided severe throbbing pain , other headache are mostly on both sides of head or central 2) migraine is most of the time so very severe that normal routine work is disturbed,concentration is affected,eye pain with blurred vision is there … in other headaches mostly eye pain or headache itself is not so severe 3) in migraine light and sound are not tolerated and cause severe attack … while in other headache no such thing 4) migraine occurs more frequently and last longer even upto weeks , other headache lasts upto few hours… 5) nausea,vomiting,giddiness,confusion,diarrhea are mostly accompanied by migraine… migraine is a vast subject and even today debates on its basic mechanism and definitive treatment is going on..
